Am I a good candidate for LASIK Eye Surgery?

Certain characteristics of your eyes as well as your general health contribute to your candidacy for LASIK eye surgery. The following checklist gives some basic guidelines that we follow to determine your candidacy for LASIK. Having a personal, complimentary consultation with one of our doctors is the best way to determine your candidacy for LASIK eye surgery.

Here are some questions to ask yourself while considering LASIK:

  • I am at least 18 years old
  • I do not have any corneal eye disease
  • My vision has been stable for at least a year
  • I have not been diagnosed with any active eye disease
  • I do not have severe problems with dry eye
  • I have do not have a severe autoimmune disease that can make healing more difficult
  • I am not pregnant or nursing

Another factor in determining if you are a candidate for LASIK is your personality and vision expectations. The following lists characteristics of people likely to be happy with their LASIK results:

  • I feel handicapped by my dependence on corrective lenses
  • Corrective lenses interfere with my recreational activities
  • Having good natural vision without the hassle of corrective lenses is more important to me than having perfect vision with corrective lenses
  • I usually adjust well to change
  • I am generally a fairly easygoing person
  • I do not have an overly perfectionistic personality
  • Corrective lenses interfere with my work or profession, and I would have better career opportunities if I had better natural vision
  • I have always envied people who were not dependant on corrective lenses

People with the following characteristics may be unhappy with their LASIK results:

  • Corrective lenses do not interfere with any of my activities
  • I notice every tiny change in my glasses prescription
  • Perfect vision with glasses is more important to me than good vision without glasses
  • I do not adapt well to change
  • I get stressed out easily when things don’t seem to happen in just the way I planned or expected
  • I am a perfectionist and little irregularities bother me
  • I would be very disappointed if I did not end up with perfect vision after my surgery and would consider the experience a failure
  • If I still needed some correction after surgery, I would be devastated
  • It would not be acceptable if I needed reading glasses at some point following LASIK
